The Update Message from the International Association of Machinists representing Continental, ExpressJet and Continental Micronesia Flight Attendants in the 2339 Local Lodges

Friday, November 11, 2005

At Continental the Union and the Company will be meeting under the auspices of the National Mediation Board on November 15, 16, and 17 in Washington DC.  We will continue to keep you advised of all future developments as they occur. Thank you for your continued support.

At ExpressJet, the road shows regarding contract negotiations ended this week in Cleveland.  The road shows have given the committee the opportunity to gather your input and share their information.  No meetings have been scheduled with the mediator assigned to ExpressJet negotiations at this time.  We will update you with information as it becomes available.

Delta Air Lines' Comair regional unit may lay off 315 pilots and flight attendants Jan. 2 as it restructures under bankruptcy protection. A spokeswoman said the airline may not need to cut all the jobs. However, the airline may cut an additional 650 positions in an effort to shed $70 million in annual costs.

Continental reported on Friday that the company lost approximately $115 million in October.

The parent company of Independence Air filed Monday for bankruptcy protection. The company said it hopes to attract investors through a court-supervised auction in the next two months.

Northwest Airlines asked a bankruptcy judge to force customer service agents to take temporary pay cuts of 19%, a move that will save about $114 million a year. The bankrupt company's pilots and flight attendants have already agreed to large temporary pay cuts.   Flight attendants will see their pay rates reduced by $20.7% in on November 16 and will lose all overrides, have their sick pay reduced to 75%, and see reductions in per diem.  Northwest wants to reduce its labor costs by $1.4 billion. It wants to negotiate long-term agreements with the pilots and flight attendants instead of asking a bankruptcy judge to impose a new contract.

Delta Air Lines pilots' union has offered the airline almost $91 million a year in concessions. In a bankruptcy court filing, the union said the cuts are more than enough to reduce Delta's labor costs to a competitive level. Delta wants to cut pilot pay by 20%, which is more than what the union proposed. A Delta spokesman said the company wants to negotiate an agreement; the company has asked the bankruptcy court to void the current contract if it cannot reach a new agreement with the union. The union said it will have the right to strike if Delta rejects the current contract.
