Airlines May Still Merge, United
CEO Says – Despite the recent failed bid of US
Airways Group to acquire Delta Air Lines, consolidation
among domestic air carriers remains possible, United
Airlines CEO Glenn Tilton said Thursday. "Nothing has
changed, as far as I am concerned, in the context of the
case for consolidation," Tilton said. He also noted that
domestic network airlines have stabilized, but are not
healthy enough to make the same level of investment in their
businesses as international competitors.
Open Skies Wins
Airline’s Support – Continental Airlines on
Thursday said it supported the open skies agreement reached
by the U.S. and EU. The airline said the agreement
"establishes a fair opportunity for it to compete in all the
important markets in the EU." Separately, United Airlines'
CEO said in a speech that the big carrier welcomed the deal.
Delta Air Lines also said it favored what it called a
landmark deal.
