Officials
with Northwest Airlines' mechanics union
said the airline indicated it may ask to end contract talks
again. Northwest recently said it was disappointed with the
union's proposal for a 16% pay cut and rejected the offer.
However, a company spokesman declined to say whether the
airline would ask the National Mediation Board to declare an
impasse in the talks. Northwest said it must lower its costs
to compete with carriers who have already won concessions
from their workers.
United Airlines
said Tuesday it lost $93 million in May because of record
fuel costs. The company also reported a $21 million
operating loss and $36 million in reorganization expenses
last month. An Associated Press story reported that
restructuring consultant Bill Brandt called United’s plan to
emerge from Chapter 11 before winter "ridiculous," because
the carrier had not yet filed a business plan or lined up
exit financing.
