Weekly Update

The Update Message from the International Association of Machinists representing Continental, ExpressJet and Continental Micronesia Flight Attendants
in the 2339 Local Lodges

Friday, July 1, 2005

As reported last week, negotiations with Continental Airlines resumed on June 20, 2005 in Houston, TX.  No progress was made.   Continental has advised the IAM they intend to apply for assistance from federal mediators.  Under the Railway Labor Act, when the parties are unable to reach an agreement in direct negotiations, an application to the National Mediation Board is made and negotiations will resume under the auspices of this federal agency. We will advise the membership when a mediator is assigned and when negotiations are scheduled to resume.  Please keep in mind that the negotiations process will continue on the government’s schedule.  Also be aware that the Company has not applied for arbitration but rather mediation as proscribe under the Railway Labor Act (RLA).  More information will be forthcoming.  Your negotiating committee continues to work hard to ensure a favorable outcome.  With your help, we will do whatever is necessary to ensure a fair contract and secure retirement.  Thank you for your continued support.

Negotiations resumed with ExpressJet on Monday June 27, 2005.  Your negotiating team made progress toward reaching an agreement.  The negotiating team and the Company recessed on Friday for the July 4th weekend.  We will update you with information as it becomes available.

With soaring oil prices recently topping $60 a barrel, Northwest Airlines is trying to offset the cost by raising its prices $50 each way on fares previously capped at $499. Continental matched the boost and Delta Air Lines matched it on some routes.

Northwest Airlines lenders may not receive all the funds owed to them if the airline files for bankruptcy. Northwest is making efforts to avoid a filing by lowering labor costs. It also wants the federal government to allow it to stretch out payments to its underfunded pension plan. Officials with Northwest Airlines' mechanics union said the airline indicated it may ask to end contract talks again. Northwest recently said it was disappointed with the union's proposal for a 16% pay cut and rejected the offer. However, a company spokesman declined to say whether the airline would ask the National Mediation Board to declare an impasse in the talks. Northwest said it must lower its costs to compete with carriers who have already won concessions from their workers.

United Airlines  said Tuesday it lost $93 million in May because of record fuel costs. The company also reported a $21 million operating loss and $36 million in reorganization expenses last month.  An Associated Press story reported that restructuring consultant Bill Brandt called United’s plan to emerge from Chapter 11 before winter "ridiculous," because the carrier had not yet filed a business plan or lined up exit financing.

The Employee Travel Center has negotiated several interline pass travel agreements for its employees' and retirees' registered domestic partners. Registered domestic partners are included in the following interline agreements: Cape Air, CommutAir, Gulfstream, Air Canada, Air New Zealand, America West, Avianca, Brussels Airlines, China Airlines, Frontier, Great Lakes Aviation, Malev Hungarian Airlines, Martinair, Mexicana, Qantas, Scandinavian, Southwest and US Airways.
