The Update Message from the International Association of Machinists representing Continental, ExpressJet and Continental Micronesia
Flight Attendants in the 2339 Local Lodges

Friday, April 13, 2007

Due to technical difficulties with our internet connection we were unable to email the Weekly Update on Friday, April 13, 2007.  We apologize for the delay and for any inconvenience.

Flight Attendants Land At Winpisinger Center - Nearly 100 IAM-represented Flight Attendants attended District 142’s second annual Flight Attendant Conference this week at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center in Southern Maryland.  Participants ranged from new hires with less than six months seniority to veterans with more than 30 years experience.  Flight Attendants discussed the IAM’s role in politics and organizing in addition to parliamentary procedure and activist recruitment.  Customized presentations were given by IAM economists and attorneys regarding pensions and retirement, the Family Medical Leave Act and airline mergers. The participants were tasked with developing action plans to improve Flight Attendant communications, education and mobilization.  “Flight Attendants have a challenging work environment that presents unique issues,” said GVP Robert Roach, Jr.  “Listening to and educating rank-and-file Flight Attendants is necessary to develop creative solutions to their concerns.  I am encouraged to see such a broad range of participants.  Many of these Flight Attendants will become the next generation of union leaders.”

Israeli Fighter Jets Intercept Continental 777 - Israel scrambled fighter jets to intercept and then escort an American commercial passenger plane to landing on Wednesday, Israeli officials said.  An Airports Authority spokeswoman said Continental Airlines' Flight 90 was intercepted after it failed to identify itself upon entering Israeli airspace.  The plane, a Boeing 777, was on a scheduled flight from , N.J. All passengers and crew disembarked safely, Israeli officials said.  The Transportation Ministry said it was investigating whether there was a technical reason for the initial lack of communication between the plane and Israeli ground control.  The Jerusalem Post reported that the incident was the closest that the Israeli Air Force has ever come to firing on a civilian airliner.

ExpressJet Corporate Charter Negotiations Update - As reported to you on February 14th, 2007, Corporate Charter negotiations were recessed on January 31st, 2007, due to the company’s absolute refusal to increase the override pay while insisting we agree to ignore many of the basis principals of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.  Such proposed agreement would result in separate, inferior work rules for the corporate Charter Flight Attendant.  Unfortunately, there is nothing new to report at this time.  Last October, the company made its first, last and only pay offer of $2.00 per hour above the current regular charter override pay, current contract 4 (T), page 27.  The company has refused to improve its offer ever since.  In view of the company’s steadfast refusal to increase corporate charter compensation, or change its position regarding certain work rules, additional meetings have not occurred.  Discussions to determine our future course of action will be taking place this week.  You will be advised of any further developments as they occur.  Your continued patience and support is appreciated.  Sincerely and fraternally, Art Teolis, Julie Frietchen & Brian Wozniak, IAM District 142 General Chairpersons.

Gulfstream Contract Negotiations - Flight Attendant contract negotiations continued at the company’s FLL offices on March 27th, 2007.  Present for the Company was Thomas Cooper, Sr., VP Legal Affairs, Mike Vaughn, Chief Operating Officer and Desiree San Filippo, Director In-Flight.  Present for the Union were Art Teolis and Brian Wozniak, General Chairpersons, IAM District Lodge 142.  A comprehensive list of proposals covering wages, hours of service, benefits and working conditions were submitted to the Company.  The proposal includes issues addressing Scheduling, Trip-Trading, Per Diem, Training, Trip Add-On’s, Drafting, Reserve Duties and numerous other issues which GIA F/A’s have expressed as items that should be addressed.  The Company is reviewing our proposals and will advise us as quickly as possible regarding scheduling future dates for continuing negotiations.  We will advise you as soon as these dates are scheduled.  Many GIA probationary F/A’s have joined the company since last August.  We cannot forward mail or other information to them without their correct e-mail or home mailing addresses.  Please contact these new-hires and ask them to forward their address information to us at the above address, fax number or e-mail address as soon as possible.  Thank you for your assistance and continued support.  Sincerely and fraternally, Art Teolis & Brian Wozniak, IAM District 142 General Chairpersons.

Local Lodge 2339C has been granted permission to change their April business meeting date from April 12th, to April 19th, due to a scheduling conflict with the Flight Attendant Conference being held April 10th through 13th, 2007.  The business meeting information has been up-dated at the end of this message to reflect the change.
